INDEPENDENT READING ACTIVITIES

Task – You have to choose from the following activities below.  Please pick 4 short activities and 2 longer activities to complete.  

Short Activities

Find new vocabulary (words) that you do not really know the meaning of and write them in your book with the meaning next to them. Use a dictionary to find out the definition of the words.

Pick a descriptive word from the text, write it down and use a thesaurus to write down five synonyms and antonyms for that word.

Re-read a chapter - pick out 10 words that you feel are powerful words and that you could use in your own writing.

Design a cover for a book you have read.

How does the story hook you in at the beginning? Make a list of words or phrases that you feel are effective in making you want to read on.

Make up a wordsearch or a crossword for the book.

Make up three questions that you would ask to check if someone had read the book carefully.

Make a list of as many adjectives as you can from a chapter of the book.

List the words and phrases used to create an atmosphere, such as ‘scary’ or ‘spookiness’ ‘tension’ ‘relaxed’ etc

Make a list of as many verbs as you can from a chapter of the book.

Make a list of as many adverbs as you can from a chapter of the book.

How did the book make you feel? Explain.

Who else should read your book and why? Who shouldn’t read your book and why?

Longer Activities

Which character in your book are you most like? Explain your answer.

Draw a picture of your favourite part of the book. Write what is happening in the picture and say why you chose this bit of the book.

Write an interview or conversation between you and the main character of your book. Be sure you write detailed

responses for the character.

Write about what a character might be thinking or feeling at different stages of the story. You could write it in the first person or in a speech bubble.

Write about a memory or experience of your own that is similar to something you have read in your book

Which character in your book would you most like to be? Explain your answer.

Think of 5 questions you would like to ask one of the characters. Then write their answers as if you were that character.

Write your own blurb for a book you have read.

Write a letter to someone telling them about your book and your opinion of it.

Construct a time line to fit your story. Include all the main events.

Re-write a chapter as a playscript.

Which character in your book are you least like? Explain your answer.

Draw and label a character or a setting from a description in the book.

Write a book review for a book you have / have not enjoyed.

Write a telephone conversation between you and one of the characters from the book.

Draw a poster advertising the book. Make sure you write on the poster why people should read it.

Re-write a part of your book from a different character’s point of view.

Draw a cartoon strip of the main events from the book.

Write a letter to a problem page as if you were one of the characters in your book. Then write a response.

Write a summary of a book you have read that sums up the main events.

Dear author… write a letter to the author of your book. Tell them your opinion of their book and ask them any questions that you would want answering about the book or about what it is like to be an author.

Write several different possible outcomes for your book.

Write a newspaper article for one of the events in your book.

Write a diary entry for one of the characters in your book.

Victorian Day

Some photos of our event.  The children had a wonderful day experiencing lots of different activities, lessons and games that the Victorian children would have themselves experienced.  It was a great success.

5L Class Assembly

After having to postpone our class assembly due to the bad weather, we have rescheduled it for this Wednesday 3rd December at 3.20pm.  We really hope you can come.

Victorian Day 5th December

The children in year 5 will be experiencing the morning in school as a Victorian child.  Children will be participating in a range of activities and to add to the occasion we would like children to dress up for the day.  Some ideas are below.  Thank you for your help with making this event a great learning experience.

Esta semana no hay deberes pues tenemos los exámenes en la siguiente.
El viernes 21 comenzamos con el de comprensión lectora.
El lunes 24 tendremos el examen de ortografía (dictado palabras agudas, llanas y esdrújulas).
El martes el de gramática y el miércoles el de expresión escrita.


El resumen del libro de lectura se entregará el 12-12  y será el último del año.

Theatre Trip on Thursday

We will be having an end of term assessment in science towards the end of this term. This week´s homework is to support the revision of the work already taught in Key Stage 2.

This week´s science homework is to make a mini-dictionary of the scientific terms that you have learnt last year. You should write at least 10 pieces of vocabulary and the definitions (meanings) of the words.

Very carefully follow all the instructions to complete the symmetry worksheet. Remember the mirror line is diagonal, not vertical or horizontal. You must use a ruler for all straight lines!

This week´s English homework is around poem related to Halloween.  

Homework Help

Synonyms are words that are similar or have a related meaning to another word.  
For example, 

• Kind:Thoughtful, Considerate, Amiable, Gracious

Alliteration happens when words that start with the same sound are used close together in a phrase or sentence

For example,

• Paula planted the petunias in the pot.
• Larry’s lizard likes licking leopards.

Onomatopoeia is word that mimics the sound of the object or action it refers to.

Science Homework for this week

Science Homework Task

Your task is to produce a piece of work on Isaac Newton and his work on light.  You can create a poster, a leaflet or a spider diagram showing what you have understood.  Below is some information on Isaac Newton, however if you want to, you can also look up more information on the internet.

Isaac Newton and Light

Isaac Newton, universally considered to be one of the greatest and most influential scientists of all time, was an English mathematical and physicist, widely known for his outstanding contributions to physics, mathematics and optics. He also invented the calculus, and formulated the three laws of motion and the universal theory of gravitation. Newton proved that sunlight is the combination of several colors.

One of the most important experiments on light was made by Isaac Newton. He was the greatest of all English men of science. He discovered that sunshine (white light) is made up of many colours. Over 300 years ago, Sir Isaac Newton passed a beam of white light through a prism. A prism is a triangular piece of glass, which allows light to spread out into a band of six colours. These colours are red, orange, yellow, green, blue and violet. 

Newton then sent this light through a second prism where the light became white once again. What did Sir Isaac Newton do? He first took the white light apart and then he put it back together again.
