5K Song Lyrics
Hello 5K! Here are the lyrics to our carol that we are going to sing next week for the concert. Just keep practising a bit every day and soon we will be perfect! See you tomorrow.
Jingle Bells
Dashing through the snow
In a one horse open sleigh
Over the fields we go
Laughing all the way. (Haha)
In a one horse open sleigh
Over the fields we go
Laughing all the way. (Haha)
The bells on bob-tail ring
They make our spirits bright
What fun it is to laugh and sing
A sleighing song tonight.
They make our spirits bright
What fun it is to laugh and sing
A sleighing song tonight.
Chorus:
Oh Jingle bells jingle bells
Jingle all the way!
Oh what fun
it is to ride
In a one horse open sleigh Hey!
Jingle bells jingle bells
Jingle all the way!
Oh what joy it is to ride
In a one horse open sleigh
Oh Jingle bells jingle bells
Jingle all the way!
Oh what fun
it is to ride
In a one horse open sleigh Hey!
Jingle bells jingle bells
Jingle all the way!
Oh what joy it is to ride
In a one horse open sleigh
A day or two ago
I thought I'd take a ride
And soon Miss FannyBright
Seated by my side
The horse was lean and lank
Miss fortuned seemed his lot
He got into a drifted bank
And we we got upset
I thought I'd take a ride
And soon Miss FannyBright
Seated by my side
The horse was lean and lank
Miss fortuned seemed his lot
He got into a drifted bank
And we we got upset
{chorus}
Now the ground is white
Go it while your young
Take the girls tonight
And sing this sleighing song
Just get a bob tailed bay
Two forty as his speed
Then hitch him to an open sleigh
And crack you'll take the lead
Go it while your young
Take the girls tonight
And sing this sleighing song
Just get a bob tailed bay
Two forty as his speed
Then hitch him to an open sleigh
And crack you'll take the lead

Maths Revision- Test Week Exam
Our exam week in Year 5 starts on the week of November 25th 2013- we will have 3 maths tests in total. Two of the tests will be written papers, (one will be a calculator paper) and the other will be a mental maths test. Like last year in Year 4, these tests cover everything for the year. Of course we haven't finished teaching the maths curriculum yet for Year 5, but these tests are useful to see how well you do on what we have studied. They will also give you an idea of what we will be looking for over the year, with regards to the rest of the curriculum. Some questions you will find tricky, (that's ok, just try your best) and many you should find ok.
Please don't panic about these tests, we just want you to try your best, and really show us what you have learned in maths. Remember, maths is a subject where knowledge is built upon lesson after lesson, year after year. Therefore, some of the questions you may have to answer, you may already be familiar with, especially from Year 4. Think about the strategies and methods you have learned, and try to apply them when you are doing the tests. Think: what is the question asking me to do? What operation do I have to use? Do I need to write any units of measurement? You should always go back and check your work at the end if you have time- it's amazing the marks you can pick up just from doing this!
In order to help you with your revision- here are the key concepts we have seen since the beginning of Year 5.
Unit 1A
*Place value- e.g. what is the value of the 5 in this number? 654,312
*Rounding numbers to the nearest 10,100 and 1000
*Compare numbers and calculations using the < and > signs
*All times tables up to the 10 times tables
*Multiplying and dividing a whole number by 10, 100 and 1000
*Multiplying using the brackets method
*Multiplying using the grid method
*Division using a number line
*Division by chunking
*Number sequences
*Square numbers
*Square roots
*Factors of 2 digit numbers
*Adding 2 and 3 digit numbers using a number line
*Adding 2 and 3 digit numbers using column addition
*Subtracting 2 and 3 digit numbers using a number line
*Subtracting 2 and 3 digit numbers using column subtraction
*Finding the difference between 2 numbers
*Problem solving
Unit 1B
See the revision page for this unit.
Please do come and ask myself or Miss Tanya if you have any queries or questions.

Celery Experiment
Celery Experiment
Do you like to water the plants in your home or garden? We already know that plants and flowers need water to grow and live but what happens after that? Find out what really happens when you sprinkle that water, with this fun experiment that shows how plants absorb water!
What You Need:
- Tall clear glass or jar
- Water
- Red food coloring
- Scissors
- Celery stalk with leaves
- Printable Observation Sheet
What You Do:
- Fill a tall, clear glass or jar half-full with water.
- Add a few drops of red food coloring and mix well.
- Trim the bottom of a large stalk of celery, leaving the leaves on the stalk.
- Place the celery stalk in the glass or jar. Leave overnight in order for the stalk to “drink” the water.
- Print out the observation sheet for this activity, and follow the instructions given.
- The next morning, observe what has happened.
- Complete the “after” portion of the observation sheet. Draw a picture of what happened and write a sentence to sum up your findings.
Now that you have seen how plants absorb water, try this experiment in a new and different way!
- Take a celery stalk with leave and trim the bottom.
- Using the scissors, make a slit up the middle of the stalk stopping an inch below the leaves.
- Fill two glasses half-full with water. Add a few drops of food coloring to one jar or glass and add a few drops of a different color food coloring into the second jar or glass.
- Mix the food coloring in each glass and place the glasses next to each other. Put one-half of the celery stalk in one glass and the other half in the other glass. Leave overnight.
- The next morning, observe what has happened. What changes do you notice about the celery and the water? What is different about this experiment compared to the first one? Each half of the celery stalk will have absorbed the colored water and the two colors will have blended together as they moved up inside the stalk!
